I apologize if this has already appeared on the board. I scrolled through and didn't really see what I was looking for. Has anyone opened a checking account on-line and what has been your experience with this? What I have heard is that there can be fewer fees and the interest on savings accounts is higher because there is less overhead. Is this the case.
Thanks!

Are you looking for a savings account or checking account?

I've opened online savings accounts with emigrantdirect.com, ingdirect.com, and hsbc.com. I used to shuffle money between them depending on who had the better rates.

Ing has a great site in my opinion, but their rates have fallen way behind, stuck at 4.35%. Emigrant is at 5.0%APY and HSBC is at 5.05%APY for their online savings accounts.

Both have their plusses and minuses, but I tend to lean towards HSBC as I like the layout of their site better and they generally are one of the first to bump rates.

I can't really comment on the checking account aspects, but I do know citibank offers an online checking account linked to an online savings account at their site, which is advertised at getting 5.0% APY.

Compared to any local bank around here, any of them are lightyears ahead in terms of interest rate, and I'd definitely recommend setting up an account.

Just go to the bank's website and Register as a new user with your information. Make sure you mom helps you with this as you want to make sure she can also access your account for security and safety reasons.
