I've been thinking about putting together a personal stock research tool, but don't know where to start. I've spent some time on Google and haven't been able to find what I'm looking for, so I decided to come here and see if any of you can help me out. The goal is to put together some code that will reduce the amount of time I spend researching companies.
If I learn how to display some basic information like price and some valuation ratios, I can really expand upon that. The problem is, I don't know where to start. I've found some code on other sites that allow you to display very basic things like price, volume, market cap, etc. What I want to be able to do is display any statistic for a stock and be able to manipulate it further. A very simplified version of what I want:
| Code: | | <code to display statistic "X"> / <code to display statistic "Y"> = New Ratio |
Can it be done more or less as simply as above? If so, what coding language should I use? I'm ok with html, and have used php and mysql a tiny tiny bit, but am willing to learn more for this project. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks. |

I made something that has cut my research time by a significant amount. I still need to neaten up the code for the sake of neatness and format it so it looks prettier. I wish I knew how to code more though. I have a bunch of ideas I'm not able to use due to my limited knowledge. This is what I've got so far:
Doesn't look like much, but it actually helps. |

A fairly good free site is www.stockcharts.com. They have custom charts also, just type $ for the symbol to get a list of all their proprietary charts, e.g. $nasi for the McClellan Summation Index for the NASDAQ and $nysi for the same on the NYSE. They have many others. You can also overlay the chart with multiple technical indicators such as Stochastics and MACD.
If you're willing to pay, go to www.worden.com for the TC2005 or the TCNet stock charting tools. I use TC2005, it doesn't have some of the bells and whistles that the day-traders like but it does everything I need.
If you're looking for some ideas for coding a system of your own, you might take a look at "New Trading Systems and Methods" by Perry Kaufman. It is very well written and explains some difficult concepts (such as how to compute the parabolic SAR) fairly clearly.
Good luck, |

I would like to hear from Soma too, it's been a while.
It's been pretty quiet around here over the summer, but it's picking back up. |
