1.) http://zonelabs.com
Zonelabs' Zonealarm is a great free firewall program that works fine with the SP2 firewall. This is a definite must for anyone who uses the internet (or some other Firewall).
2.) http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
It is very necessary to stay current with all updates provided by MS.
3.) http://Mozilla.org
Firefox is a great open source web browser I would highly recommend. It is more secure, and more feature rich than IE.
4.) http://grisoft.com
AVG Anti Virus: It's a free anti virus program that is quite good (frequently updates its virus definition files)
5.) http://lavasoft.com
Adaware SE 1.6: Get's rid of spy/ad ware. If you're running Firefox and don't go to questionable sites and open questionable email you won't need this one too much (but it certainly doesn't hurt)
=======
That's the software I use. Post free software you use and links to download them. |

Excellent list Soma!
Zonealarm works great, but does get annoying at times. A nessasary evil though to keep stuff out and to stop your computer communicating with things in the background you don't know about. You'd be amazed at how many programs want to "Phone Home" and tell them...who knows what.
Windows update is a given. Would you drive your car for 50,000 miles with out an oil change? Do this regularly.
Firefox is cool. It's kind of like getting a virus on a Mac...it doesn't happen very often. Firefox isn't as popular as IE so it isn't targeted by malicious programmers as much.
I have not heard of AVG antivirus, but if you list it with these other programs I'd definetly check it out.
AdAware is great for spyware. Some would recommend you use others as well, but this is all I use. If you ever get pop-ups after connecting to the internet before you even open your browser or at sites that wouldn't have pop-ups you have some bad stuff going on. This will usually take care of it. |

AVG has been a relatively solid anti-virus program for the past few years. Works well for the most part and for my setup, has never been a huge resource hog.
I also (just out of paranoia) run two (free) online scans at least once every two weeks just to sort of 'get a second opinion':
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
They're both very well done, but require the use of IE as they are activex based. I usually just log on to either site when i head to bed and when I wake up its done and hopefully all is well
I think with a hardware firewall and router, windows firewall (ha!), and zonealarm ... coupled with regular MULTIPLE spyware and antivirus sweeps, you can keep your system mostly spot free.
Other good things to check out are:
spybot search and destroy (for spyware/adware) - http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpyBot-Search_&_Destroy_d2471.html
thunderbird (outlook replacement)-
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/
hijack this (shows all loaded and running processes and info)-
http://www.majorgeeks.com/HijackThis_d3155.html
It's good to use multiple, different products to help secure yourself. No one product will or can catch everything. Even every product together won't catch everything, but using a variety of tools routinely and in unison can definitely help make your system a little safer and smoother. |

Also, AVG/grisoft offers a variety of antivirus programs (free, corporate, personal, etc etc).
To get the free version (which has the same detection capabilities as the others) the direct link is http://free.grisoft.com |

does anyone here use a product called anonymizer?
Anonymous Surfing redirects your web traffic through our secure servers, hiding your online identity. Identity thieves, aggressive marketers, hackers and online snoops are prevented from accessing your personal information and viewing your Internet activity.
anyways, here are some of my recommendations:
roboform a Password Manager and Web Form Filler that completely automates password entering and form filling.
virtual credit cards - if you're planning to use your credit card online i'd recommend using a virtual credit card number generator. both Citi and MBNA have them, you just download a small app or genereate it on their web site. for example, with my Citi account i can generate a virtual cc number and specify when it expires (default is 1 month). you can also set a limit on how much can be charged to that number. check with your credit card company to see if they offer this feature.
for a firewall i use kerio. the free version works exactly like the full version, except that it doesn't provide the content filtering capabilities such as blocking pop-up windows, ads, VB scripts, cookies, etc. - why would you want a firewall to do these things for you anyways? especially if you're using firefox, which already has these features built in.
those who use email programs like eudora or outlook, i suggest you use mailwasher first. when you read an email with outlook, eudora, or most any mail reader, the person that sent it can easily find out if you got it. don't give me that "i already turned off read receipt" look, go to this site and use the free trial to see for yourself how it can be done http://didtheyreadit.com/ btw, there are many other things you can avoid with mailwasher. they used to have a lite version that was free but now it's only free for a month and then you have to buy it. if anyone knows of something similar to this out there please share it. |

I never really cared for any of the anonymizer software or proxies or such that I used, but that was almost two years ago. Just seemed more of a hassle for not that much more security.
I've never liked storing my password and form info on my computer, even if its supposedly secure, just because its most likely in one file. If someone ever got a hold of said file, they could potentially have access to everything, where as entering them manually doesnt require that much more effort (and everything i have is different) and just seems a little more secure imo. However, I guess if someone was in my computer to get a password file, it's likely a keylogger would be there too and they'd get my info as I logged into any site, so kind of do your own thing. =/
Kerio looks nice, thanks for suggesting it. Have to give it a shot when I get home. |

-I use WinXP SP2 (no other fixes beyond that)
-Firefox 1.0.5
-Standard netgear wireless router with firewall
-Norton AV corporate edition updated religiously.
Beyond that, I don't use any other security measures on an always on cable connection. In my experiences, I have never been hacked, never got infected by a virus ever (except when my roommate used it and downloaded and installed random crap). I'm jsut pc literate enough to know what not to download and what to install. |

I'm with chahsiubow.. I have same config except for AV. I don't use an AntiVirus program at all. Don't use lavasoft products anymore downloaded ran em clean except for MRU list. I repair computers on the side and the programs I use are mostly Hijackthis, Adaware, XP sp2, then give em Firefox with adblock, and weatherfox(if they want). I have actually seen Firefox Hijacked on a few peoples computer. Some people just dont know what they are clicking yes for. It doesnt make me made just makes me more money ... also I check the harddrive myself and delete programs even if you cant delete just use cmd and kill explorer browse and del. |

That looks like one of those cheap light up games you play that were advertised in the early 90s. |
