If you mean items from the virtual shop, some of them do gain in value. But those gains don't help you win the contest. If you want to win the monthly contest you have to post at least 10 times in a month, and you have to invest in stocks or something that you can trade via your portfolio. Just remember as you are starting out that - just like real life - commissions can really affect your returns. Especially if you're buying 10-12 shares at a time.
Good luck, and welcome to eInvesting. |

I plan to try playing around with some ETFs this month. So far I have one quick in/out trade on DIA yesterday. I tried doing another today but entered the wrong share amount and my trade got cancelled.
Just as well, would have ended up losing money today so far.
ETFs - if you don't know what those are - are exchange traded funds. Mutual funds cannot be "traded" during the day like stocks, all buys / sells of mutual funds take place after the 4:00 market close when the fun sets their NAV or Net Asset Value. An ETF like DIA or SPDR can be traded throughout the day, and gives you a way to trade shares of the Dow or S&P500 index.
So if you don't want to risk playing an individual stock, but still think the market is going to move (and it usually does), an ETF is an interesting way to play. |

DOW is Dow Chemical, if you are looking to buy the Dow Jones Industrials ETF the ticker is DIA. If you'd like to buy individual components of the DJIA, then that is another issue - right now I like Wal-Mart (WMT) although there are certainly others to consider.
For a list of all ETFs, as tracked by Yahoo Finance, check this list.

There are 551 for you to sort through as of last count, have fun. |

I invested in the energy sector during the fall that happened this summer, but lost some when the markets climbed back up. Some of my companies are still gaining, while some have lost a little, but I'm holding out to break even before getting out of them.
Here on the sim I also invest in items like property and collectibles to boost my networth and to secure uninvested money somewhere it can help me out - even the 2-3% a month on these items can help out a lot!! |

Hmm i like WMT too...but i wanna save some money for now to play around with buyin and sellin stocks....but i need to find away to find more money....i wanted to do the banner but i still dont knoe if myspace counts or not..haha...and as for the energy alternative...i agree saving energy and finding alternatives but from wat i predict...theres always a bad in somthing "good" as technology advances...problems arises no matter how "perfect" technology is created
we dont c it yet but after many years there is always something that we need to fix...nothin is perfect and possibly we might not be able to do much better than wat we would think...
but ofcourse this is comming from an unexperienced mind with no degree yet...sry haha |
