As a general rule, you should understand what the company you are investing in does. From time to time I look at pharmas and related companies, but they are very hard to establish values for because of the nature of medicine development and whatnot. If you stick to areas where you are more or less competant, you greatly reduce the chances of getting burned - how many people do you think knew anything about the business aspects of dot-coms in 1999? |

| I would say that the resource sector is good place to start. |

Ouch. Those seem to be a collective house of pain.
Keep in mind that there are alot of businesses that are useful, but don't offer any real chance for owners to profit. Airlines fit that bill perfectly, as does satellite radio.
I never really bought into the "invest in what you know" because I naturally don't know that much about various products. I prefer to take a look at businesses that appear to be good financially, and see if they have a sustainable business model. |
