The general rule was that "dot" stocks traded on the Pink Sheets or OTCBB changed symbols too much and were too much of an inconvenience.

Perhaps JRW will change this.

okay, they change frequently, I can understand the sim not wanting to mess with them.

in real life, is there a significance? You mention something about the pink sheets.. what is that?

Mostly penny stocks, which many are "pump and dumps".

No, those stocks get regular symbols unless they are the ones with the dot in them.

Investopdia Says pink sheets are:

Quote:
A daily publication compiled by the National Quotation Bureau with bid and ask prices of over-the-counter stocks, including the market makers who trade them. Unlike companies on a stock exchange, companies quoted on the pink sheets system do not need to meet minimum requirements or file with the SEC. Pink sheets also refers to OTC trading.

The pink sheets got their name because they were actually printed on pink paper. You can tell if a company trades on the pink sheets because the stock symbol will end in ".PK".

There are two main restrictions on the simulator today: you have to trade stuff $2 a share or higher (which eliminates most pink sheets / OTC stocks) and there cannot be a "dot" in the symbol (which also eliminates options trading, as the sim just isn't set up for that yet). You can, however, trade things like ^DJI which would let you trade shares of the Dow Jones Index. So there are other things that you can play with.
