Do you think VOIP will really take off in 2005, or ever?
In case you haven't heard, VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocal) is basically telephone over the internet. It has increcible potential, and a lot of major companies plan to release a VOIP product in 2005, or in the future (included in these "rumors" is Google ) I personally don't think it will take off that quickly, unless it is extremely cheap, or as possibly rumored by some companies, free. So many people have cell phones, and I don't think people will buy a VOIP package instead of a land based line, just because in general, the public does not trust computers, and if a server goes down, then you are basically screwed. However, if it is free, I would expect a lot of people to try it out, and it could rapidly grow.

| Its just starting to take off with all the messenger clients starting to upgrade to make their services better and with the internet phone lines companies can take a phone call any where in the world so it will grow. |

| I think it will really take off, especially for businesses as they make heaps of calls and not having to pay for these would really help their profit margin. Even for consumers, if it is FREE, then i would definately give it a go. |

| I think it will take off, only if they work out the bugs. My friend has it and there is some interference, and also if they get it to work with satellite tv (right now if you have satellite tv that needs to dial up daily VOIP won't work). |

I think it can certainly take off.
Many messenger groups are incorporating VOIP services, and companies (Vonage for example) are finding ways to eliminate the need for a ground phone line. |

| VOIP will take off, but I have a feeling that it will take a while. In order for it to fully launch, they need to make some consumer-friendly software/hardware, like AOL did for internet (provide for the masses)- next thing you know everyone will be using it. |

| I think also it will take off especially since so many soldiers are in Iraq and other places it would be easier to take to them.. |

| I think it will be a big hit as well. AIM, Yahoo, MSN... they have all done very well and I think they will add it to their already free software |

| Similar to what you find with dial-up internet providers. A very gradual decline in price to match the demand. |

We turned off our land line a few months ago and just use our cell phones. Don't miss the land line one bit.
There is a negative though, dialing 911 from your cell phone can be a pain. |

Keep in mind that the telcos already use VoIP to handle some of their traffic. Also, many businesses have or are switching over. But your question seems to be regarding VoIP targeted at consumers. I think there is a market, but it is obviously with people who have broadband internet access through someone other than their Tel. Co. This basically means their cable companies. A lot of consumers don't like their cable companies any more than their telco, so I think the cable cos will need to offer it directly, just as they've offered PVRs.
The other method of growth is through wireless. If more cities and businesses start to offer free wireless, all the people with Treos and Blackberries may consider switching to VoIP PDAs. But the Telcos are fighting this & trying to push legislation through in many states that would make it hard to setup free public wireless. |
