To me, google seems like a plain old search engine, free of charge, that also runs email on the side and powers advertisements all over the web. How does that make them a billion dollar company and where does all that money come from?

It is hard to believe that the majority of their income comes from people clicking on advertisements. I never click those.

Heh, its not a billion dollar company... its a $150 billion company by market valuation standards. Wink

Where does the money come from? Well, that depends what you mean by "money". On a true free cash flow basis, Google makes nearly nothing. You would be correct to say that advertisements are responsible for something like 98% of revenues and income though...

Not 140,000,000 - thats 140 million. It made them worth 150,000,000,000 give or take a few.
Also, clicking on the bar is a good thing. Wink

CNBC actually made a BIG deal about the Super Bowl ads that were run. Even had ole Donnie Douche-bag come on to give his overinflated opinion of what he thunk was a good ad. Rolling Eyes In reality Arrow Who shivagits?!! Eventually the day will come when NIKE won't be out lookin fer a wunderkind offa Youtube (now werth 1.5 bil Rolling Eyes ) to come up with an ad to promote their chitin overpriced gangsta rapper shoes....cause the ads where NIKE pays a bunch ov NBA thugs $1.5 mil each ainna werkin no mo. Wink When dat day comes Arrow GOOG is a sub $100 stock. Sidenote: There will still be fokes who will pay $3000 a ticket to sit in the rain and watch da Stooper Bowl. Luckily for us many of them buy stocks on Cramer's advice so at least sum ovem will be eliminated....as I often stated, dat'll be good for orderly mawkets. Laughing

Geb is sick, so he can't share this, but when GOOG was at $500 he had the wisdom to take out a bearish option spread that gets nice and in-the-money once GOOG goes under $460. Maybe GOOG being about $2.50 from that point will make him feel better.

Google Earth has actually been around for a while. I know I had a version of it on my old computer, so it has to be more than 6 months old.
