If you want to write your own software there are alot of tutorials and books you can get. Just choose a good progamming language!

Coding is definitely not a problem for me, but good data is nearly impossible to find.

I've been thinking about trying to make a few neural networks. Maybe a couple based on technical analysis inputs and a couple based on fundamental analysis inputs and one based on inputs applicable to both methods. There are alot of possible variations I could try so it could be a pretty lengthy process to find the best one if I can even get one to work at all.

So INWB, does your Excel sheet give you an estimate of the intrinsic value?

What type of ANN are you looking to write, feed foward backpropigation multilayerd? Alot of people use matlab to design there neural networks. However, I programme in java and c++ to design mine.

You can get free end of day data from yahoo finance, I have written a small programme in java that downloads all ot the historcal data for each country/ stock you choose. and you can config the format, account for splits, input the from and to date, etc. And only have to do this once, not for each stock... then click download and does the whole load for you. Let me know if you want, Il give it away free. My computer is fried at the moment, so give me a couple of weeks to get it running again.

Yahoo finance is limited to about only 30,000 stocks last time I checked.

(Ps, things like metastock and HQ are free for a trial period only)

I've been reading this discussion with interest.

However instead of writing my own trading system, I am wondering if there are some useful software toolkits out there that help creating trading systems using NN's, genetic algorithms or other serious technology.

I did some searching but mostly found commercial software vendors that don't seem very objective or even serious as there websites are mostly claiming the very high returns that their software will deliver, instead of explaining convincingly how it will achieve that. I don't need to hear about possible returns because I am aware that my returns will depend on how I use the software and not just on the software itself.

Does anybody know some good software that offers useful technology/methods?
