Why can we not trade in odd lots?

You should be able to buy in odd lots... now I usually buy in larger blocks but I don't remember ever having a problem when I bought odd lots with a smaller portfolio.

That's correct, you can buy as few as 1 and as many shares as you have e$ funds for. The 100 shares is an editable field that you can change during your order process. If you are having problems with this, please let me know.

Post in the correct topic. Smile If you were a monthly winner then you can PM Benjamin. Or find the spot where he announced the winner list and make sure you're on it first.

A one time sell of the same stock that you bought on different times should be included in the next update. I brought this up on another thread and hoping that it be included soon.

Also, on the "Manage Your Portfolio" page, the table should include today's (daily) TOTAL gains/losses on the "Change" column.

I assume you mean a new column for day's change amount, rather than just having the current share difference for the day. That would be simple enough to do. The current screen is designed so that folks with smaller screens (800 x 600 resolution) don't have to scroll. If we add too much information, it's going to start scrolling. Smile

I'm sure something can be worked out.

Dave, to do the one time sell of the same stock you bought at different times (and get charged only once), eliminate the "sell" column. Instead, put a blank check box before the symbol. The user can then select which group he wants to trade by checking the boxes. Then he can click on a 'sell' button at the bottom of the table. What do you think?

You can also do this for different stocks. If you want to liquidate all of your holdings, then you can conveniently do it by checking all the boxes and clicking the 'sell' button instead of going through each one of them.

esquire415, I have a number of different designs in mind. I have had accounts at several different online brokerages, and I tend to look at their screens for ideas. Afterall, they probably paid big $$ to a professional designer, why shouldn't I use their ideas too? Laughing

I asked for feedback a while back on the javascript used on the trading screen that shows your monthly return, and unfortunately didn't get a lot of responses. I was looking for feedback to see how compatible the code was with different browsers.

Here's how E*Trade shows a screen with multiple holdings of a same stock, I expect to do something like this:

That shows the base portfolio screen. I have purchased ORCL stock on more than one occasion, so there's a + next to the position. The rolled up values include all of my holdings, with average prices. Clicking the + expands to show the details.

Note that I can sell the entire holding, or an individual row. There is a sell link at each level. There is also a "buy" link if I want to add to the position. I envision something like this happening for us here.

That's a nice touch. Actually I thought of something like that too but since it's more difficult to explain, I would think it would be more difficult to program. My cheap deep discount broker (LowTrades) don't even have any kind of feature to do such transactions. I have to call them.

There's two parts to it. First, building the interface. Second, writing the code to interact to the interface. Guess which part is harder. Laughing

Here's a thing that disturbes me:
At the moment I have 3 holdings and about 650e$.
I already know that I won't be near a computer when the markets open. What I want to do is sell two of my holdings and buy a new one. I already have entered the sell orders but I can't enter the buy order for enough stocks because I don't have enough free money at the moment. Could the simulator be edited so that one can enter buy orders for as many stocks as one wants and it only checks the funds at the time of the actual transmission?

When you enter trades in a "real" broker you cannot do what you are asking. You have to have the capital in the account in order to make the trades. Trades don't settle for 3 days, and making a "buy" based on funds from a sale that hasn't settled yet is not allowed.

That being said, from a pure code perspective what you're suggesting can be done. It's just not real. Smile I'll let Ben make the call.

I think what your wanting to do can be done once limit orders are in place. As long as the funds are there and the price is right the order should execute unless you cancel it.

Some of the feedback I've gotten is people really don't know how much in e$ they have after entering orders. Say you put in an order of 100 shares at $10 you need to keep in mind you have 1000 e$ less than it shows.

How difficult would it be to show in your portfolio the total amount queue'd up to show how much you have available to trade? I know the numbers can change, but even an estimate would be good. Also if you sell a stock the sell link in the portfolio changes to "In the sell queue" or something.

Ben, the changes to be completed include withdrawing funds from your account as soon as the order is placed. That would take care of the confusion. If the order is not filled for some reason (for example, if the stock moves up too quickly, and you don't have anough "extra" funds to cover the difference) then the funds will be returned.

This goes back to the whole "you can't cancel market orders" thing that was talked about several months ago.

The firewall where I spend my day is all-of-a-sudden not allowing me to post here. So last night I sold a stock. I get home today and see the stock sold at 13:50 after the stock dropped about 5% throughout the morning and before the stock came back up 4%.

My suggestion is for more timely trade executions.
