I just saw H&R Block's ad on this site and wondered how many people still do their own tax preparation and filing?

This should be determined by your tax liability. I have a modest liability, so do them myself (I typically do them on line through freefile). If you have more significant liabilities, you should splurge on having someone else do them for you AND doing them yourself one year. If they save you more than they cost, they are worth your contiued business. If not, think about whether they were particularly dumb or whether you were particularly savvy. If the former, look for another preparer next year. If the later, keep doing them yourself!

I have only paid to have my taxes done one time. We had just moved, had sold a piece of property, bought and sold some stocks for the first time... there were a lot of "Unknowns" in our return. So I paid to get the taxes done. Now I fully expected to owe taxes, in fact I was quite sure of it. So imagine my surprise when the tax preparer said we were getting over $1K in a return. Shocked

I took the paperwork home and did an "audit". By this I mean if I could not understand where a number came from, I read the documentation and the rules and associated IRS materials until I could. The bottom line?

The reason we got a return was he made a data entry error. Rolling Eyes Now I don't expect everyone to be perfect every time, but I do expect someone that I am paying for their service to be dilligent and check their work. When I took the return back to him to have him correct it, he was "kind enough" <sarcasm> to not charge me for the additional time and visit to his office, since the mistakes were his fault.

Needless to say, we did not use that particular person. We use Turbo Tax now, and it's great. Cool
