| I dont think it will help either. I would suggest that if teh house is uninhabited, try to contact whoever owns and see about demolishing it, an empty lot next door would definatly get you more for your home than a run down house |

| Make the curb appeal of your house so much greater that the "classic" next door wont even register! On a serious note remember that their is likely to be a lot of people looking at your house and interested in the neighborhood. If you lose a couple potentials due to a house that needs some help near by I am sure that someone will be interested. Focus on your house and the little things you can do to improve the impression it leaves on people... Bake something, fresh flowers, keep it neat and tidy because by the time people get in your house they'll forge about the old one near by. |

| One thing that can help a lot for a small cost is to contact the owner and ask if they don't mind you doing a little bit of landscaping in their front yard, especially since a really unkempt yard usually looks just as bad as an ugly house. If they share a grass area next to you, most of the time they won't care and might even appreciate the free landscaping for a few months. My neighbors have a terrible looking yard, and the people we bought our house from actually did yard work for them before they sold so it didn't look so bad. I will likely have to do the same if we want sell. It can go a long way to improving the image for only the cost of some grass seed and fertilizer. |

Thats interesting, I have heard of people doing that quite a bit actually. I have heard of people who have their gardener go to the neighbors and do minor gardening just to make their section of the street a little nicer.
I have a buddy who got sick of his beighbors side part of the property looking like a "weed jungle" and pretty much landscaped it and beautified it so his area of the neighborhood didnt look trashy, lol. |

Now ya'll see, this is where us Monanans have the advantage. We got so blame many deer runnin' around eatin' everythin' in sight that EVERYBODY's yard looks like it's just been pruned!
Not all bad 
But in answer to your question, yes, the yard will hurt you. Just last week I passed on a steal of a rental because the folks across the street had a yard that would pass easily for a junk yard. I had no intention of fighting with them, or ignoring the problem, so I passed on the deal. Too bad too, it was a late 1800's home that still had the Smithy's forge and anvil in the addition off the back of the home. My wife said I should just buy the junker place too and clean it up. I'm 53, I don't have that many years left! It would take most of a life time.  |

We have similar problems here in florida, except it's with gators and big mice! 
If the neighborhood looks run down the price of your home will run down also. |

| Yes, I have to confess that should I crawl under the house to check beams and find an alligator in residence, it just might stifle the deal a bit Heck, I thought it was bad when I found the rattle snake! I nearly pooped myself then! I can't imagine an alligator.... not in THOSE close quarters anyway! |

The house next to mine is a mess. Every buyer asks about it.
We get good buyer calls off of www.buyowner.com and www.mlsrealty.com but when they come out they look at our neighbors house and don't come back.
My wife says we would be better off paying to side their house for $4000!. |

What about local zoning laws? It won't cost you anything. |
