What is everyones thoughts on the rail industry. On one side costs are going up for the rail companies as gas prices climb but they are much more effecient at moving large amounts of goods. I can not help but thinking this is generally a strong long term industry to invest in.

I ran into something interesting about this subject,
Japan's biggest rail company will soon test using fuel cells to help power a train, following the lead of automakers in rolling out cleaner, more efficient transportation.
Pollution-free fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapor as exhaust.
East Japan Railways Co., which serves the congested Tokyo area and carries 16 million passengers a day, will start test runs of the NE Train, or New Energy Train, in July with the aim of operating it on regular tracks by the middle of next year.

| Interestingly enough living in Western Canada I have been following Canadian National Railway (CNI)-(NYSE) and the fact that the two largest railways in Canada have been working together to resolve backlogs of containters coming into the country. They have split the shipping on different lines and are carrying each others traffic in order to boost efficiency. Both companies seem to be enjoying this benefit but I suspect with this team work that they have been utilizing elsewhere that It will benefit the overall operations not having cargo sitting stagnant in the system. See what happens. I know the government is talking about spending over 500 million in improving the ports in the west now we'll see if someone in Canadian polotics actually follows through on a promise... |
