I'd like to point out that there is also a lot of importance in being realistic about what a child will need in college. Most teenagers really don't want to give up their cars for college, but unless its absolutely needed for work or commuting, having a car can be a real financial drain on most college students. The big campuses usually set up roadblocks to add to the expense like charging high fees for parking passes on campus. For the typical college student, the financial burden of having a car is usually delegated to the parents though. |

| It depends what kind of campus it is, if it is a commuter campus and the child still lives at home, having a car can actually save you money depending on what way you look at it. They have the ability to drive to school, so they dont stay which takes out the room and board cost. and these days that can pretty expensive, 7$ grand a semester for some |

| Oh yeah, commuting from home is definately the best way. I was mostly referring the average middle class college experience where college students move far from home and live on or close to campus for all 4 years. |

I lived on campus for the first part of college. But at some point if you get a job off-campus it becomes more appropriate to have a car. It depends on the campus, of course.
I just remember for the first few years of being at college I kept getting nailed for parking tickets at registration, and I didn't even have a car. Turns out that there was another "David Rathbun" at school at the same time, and he had a car, but his middle initial came after mine. When the tickets hit the system, they picked my name first because it was listed first. |
