What does everyone think of Corning at the moment?

I like it.

It was recently mentioned in BusinessWeek in a positive light, with the suggestion that it could go to 33 this year. Since it started the year just at $20, that's a healthy gain.

Yeah, I just found that article after I posted this, it seems like a dependable company to me.

Went from 14 to 113 in 99-2000 Shocked Surprised

Please don't take that run-up as any indication of future growth of this stock. Shocked That was part of "internet mania" and it was all about fiber optic cable. Quest and Enron (yes, Enron) were buying up all this cable and laying it down to be able to carry all of the information from the super-improved-whamo-internet thingie. Laughing

Corning tanked along with everything else when the Dot-Bomb went off.

Today they are in another "hot" market, but one with more reasonable and sustainable growth, in my opinon. They have remade themselves into one of the prime supplies of flat panels used for making laptops and the big, sexy flat-panel digital televisions. Flat panel televisions sales are increasing dramatically, and Corning is positioned to benefit from that.

Hehe yeah. I realized that, just thought it was interesting (and I know many companies benefitted, and subsequentally crashed, from the whole tech craze thing)

I think Dave is pretty much our Corning expert here, I've neglected to give him his propers for picking it for the long-term portfolio... as much as some people named hmmmmmGrimhmmmmm go doom and gloom on it, its performed extremely well so far. Someday, I'll get around to giving my take.
As for now, great pick Dave!

I'm far from being an expert! Shocked I know GLW from when I followed it (and briefly owned it) back during the "glory days" of the Internet boom, followed by the Internet Bomb. I have remained interested in the company, and when I read about their new focus on the flat panels used for digital televisions about 5 minutes after I read an article that said digital televisions should see a phenomonal acceptance / penetration rate, well, it just seemed to make sense. Smile That's about the extent of investigation. I don't know a thing about their financials, and I suspect that their past financials are going to be misleading anyway.

Besides, last time I checked PALM had taken over the top spot in the long term challenge.

Now there is tons of dark fiber in the ground in our neck of the woods. Last rumor was that Bill Gates was slowly buying it up, Not thru microsoftie either?

It would not surprise me if Bill was buying it up, probably for pennies on the dollar. At some point all that "dark" fiber will be lit up. I envision a future where the big pipes from city to city are all fiber, but everything local is wireless.

I could see that. Chicago is talking about having full coverage for wireless access. I don't know if it's free or what, but that will mean trouble for ISP businesses.

Wireless just makes sense. There's little or no infrastructure. In developing countries with little or no phone service everything is going in cellular. No wires, just towers and transmitters. Wireless bandwidth is getting better all the time, Wireless G is now up to 54mbs. Granted "wired" is still faster (anybody have 1GB ethernet for a home network yet?) but wireless is getting to be "fast enough".

I invested in some wireless service providers / equipment providers a few years back, but it was too early, and I lost a few pennies. I still believe it's coming.

Speaking of wireless, I read a report earlier today about the Chinese and wireless that 500 million will have wireless handsets. I been trying to find a manufacturer though, no luck yet.

I had some extra time tonight, so here is my official professional opinion on Corning (GLW):

From its current price in the low $27s, I would rate it a "2.5" on the 1-5 scale where "1" is a strong buy and "5" is a strong sell. I wouldn't take anything more than a small position in it, because although the possibility for it to go to the low $30s is there - it came up in the optimistic scenarios of my model - I think it is much more likely to stay in the $25-$28 range. Analyst expectations are that Corning will grow earnings at a rate of 20% per year, no easy feat for such a large company. Despite the stellar performance so far this year, the current price does not justify additional investment, in my opinion.
