I need to learn to stay out of the stores. Everytime I go to Walmart for "milk" I come out with a cart full of stuff. Were they good deals? Yes- did I really need them? Probably not....

This is a good idea. I think they also say when your shopping is to not go hungry, because everything looks good!

I've heard the same.
It can be difficult, but making a list and sticking to it is a great way of cutting down on extra and unneccessary expenses. I find it helps if you tell someone what you are planning on getting, so they can hold you accountable for any extra purchases. If you know someone is going to look at what you buy you might be less likely to buy on impulse. |

Also, I hear it's better to take cash and pay with it. Studies show that it's easier to "part" with checks or credit-card money ~ and that you'll end up spending 15% more when you pay with a credit card than you would if you had to layout cash bills on the counter.

I have the same trouble with Target- I always think of things I "need" and then I return them. I am in college and my mom still feeds my school bank account so I have rent and food money so I dont have much to put aside. It is sitting in a savings account at home not making any money but not being touched!

We've given Wal-mart up. We just go to a grocery store and we save about $30 per week. We don't buy the stupid stuff this way.

I agree. There is something about Walmart that makes me buy more because it's a 'good' price. But the fact is, when I go in planning on buying $60 worth of groceries, somehow I always end up writing a check for $100 worth of 'bargains'. There's too much to choose from and I usually end up buying more!

One thing I do like about Walmart in regards to groceries is that they match competitors prices. So instead of going to a ton of places to get weekly specials I can get them all at Walmart. I do like that part of it- but like previously mentioned they do have great prices and I end up with useless bargains!
