Since Iceemaan didn't post the solution, just the answer, it will allow other folks to try to see where the number came from. |
Its actually quite simple, its just a matter of adding one to the starting number (zero) and doubling it, then repeating that four more times.
0 + 1 = 1 x 2 = 2
2 + 1 = 3 x 2 = 6
6 + 1 = 7 x 2 = 14
14 + 1 = 15 x 2 = 30
30 + 1 = 31 x 2 = 62
I'm not going to go on saying that I would have won if I had been logged on, but I am going to say that no math teacher I've ever had has given full credit for a solution without work. So here's a shameless plug for some props.
Aw heck, what would I do with the money anyway? Nice work Iceeman. |

I thought the point was not to have a solution so other people could try to figure it out? I also want to make note that I hate math. It makes me |

yeah that is the point. and i like math, and would rather not see the solutions unless i ask for it. |

Nah, leave it for now. The trick to this one is realizing what you do know and working from there. For example, there are three things that you know. First, there were five stores and therefore five iterations of the formula. Second, you end up with zero, so whatever formula you have has to end with zero. Zero + 1 = $1 for what was spent in the last store. And then you double it and add 1, as INWB showed. I think that the trick is to realize which end of the problem to start with.
I'll try to post new problems at various times throughout the day, so people that are on at the same time every day will get a chance to win. |

haha no not now...im just agreeing with geb about what Dave had suggested about it being a good idea not to post the solution so that other people could have the chance to do the math for themselves if they are interested in doing so |

I bought a book of math and logic puzzles a while back to use as challenges for another board I run. There it was for pride and fun only. Here it will be for e$500 per winning answer... first winning answer to each puzzle. Some of the puzzles are going to be actual math problems, others require logical thinking instead. I'm going to post no more than two challenges per week, and will try to post them at different times of the day in order to give folks that sign on at various different times a shot at winning the challenge. The rules:
- The answer in the book is final. Blame the publisher, not me, if you don't agree
- The first person to post the correct answer wins. Posting only, no PM's please.
- You cannot win two challenges in a row, so the previous winner is not eligible for this challenge.
- You may win more than one challenge, just not two in a row.
I won't post any more than one puzzle per day. That will let people argue over the answers. Thanks for playing
Ready?
Here's your second e$ Challenge Puzzle!
Let us follow the hour and minute hand of a clock for 24 hours. How many times do they form a right angle? |

And so it is. Here is the explanation from the book:
"During the first 12 hours the minute hand is over the hour hand at 12:00 and won't cross it again for at least an hour. In the last hour the minute hand does not cross the small one except at the twelfth hour (12:00). However, the hands cross once during each hour in between, the 12 crossings in 12 hours determine 11 intervals, and during each interval the hands form a right-angle twice. Total: 22 right angles. There is no overlap between the 12-hour periods, as far as right angles go. There are another 22 right angles in the second 12 hours. Thus the hands form 44 right angles during 24 hours."
nelaina is our second e$ Challenge winner, congratulations.
I'll post the next puzzle sometime next week. Enjoy your weekend. |

thanks. at first I sort of figured it out in my head that it occurred 2 times per hour, but then i actually got a clock and went through to figure that it happens 22 times per 12 hours as opposed to 24
starting at 12:16 is :32, :32, :32, :33, :33, :33, :33, :33, :32, :33, :32, :33, :33, :33, :32, :33, :33, :33, :32, :33, :33, :32 |
