Edited to update Title, prizes are now e$1000 instead of e$500.

I bought a book of math puzzles a while back to use as challenges for another board I run. There it was for pride and fun only. Here it will be for e$500 per winning answer... first winning answer to each puzzle. To keep me from going completely broke, I won't post any more than one puzzle per day. That will also let people argue over the answers. Razz Keep in mind that the answer provided will be the one from the book. If there is an error in the book, it's not my fault. But the book's answer will stand as the correct answer.

Ready?

Here's your first e$ Math Challenge Puzzle!

Benjamin spent all of his money in five stores. In each store, he spent $1 more than half of what he had when he entered the store. How much did Benjamin have when he entered the first store?

There are around 100 puzzles in the book. Smile If I post 2-3 a week, it should be good for a while. I figure I'll earn enough in replies to the topic to pay out the prizes. Cool And we should all be good at math in order to do our investing analysis, right? Wink

How much did Benjamin have when he entered the first store? Not enough. He could not go to a sixth store

PS I agree with the answer of $62

We have a winner already. Very Happy

e$500 will be sent shortly.

Next puzzle will be posted tomorrow. If someone else wants to post a puzzle, that's fine, but you're responsible for paying the winner. Wink

Since Iceemaan didn't post the solution, just the answer, it will allow other folks to try to see where the number came from. Cool

I'm just taking them out of the book. Smile Some of them are harder than others, yes. We'll see how it goes.

Anyone have a problem if I modify the rules and say that the same person can't win twice in a row? That way we can spread it around some... that okay?
