Well, the website is for all sorts of educational purposes (you, a family member, or a friend to go to college or pay off a college loan). They encourage you to use a 529 program but it isn't required. You can withdraw the money and put it to use as you see fit.

I'm withdrawing some of our account and putting it into a CD for educational purposes.

My old mortgage company had a deal there when we were refinancing. We saved more money going elsewhere though. Upromise has alot of potential.
