I think thats going to become a more common trait among corporations... the day of the company funded pension has passed. Everyone sees how high legacy costs can be, and now they are going to pass retirement saving solely to their employees. Good thing you're here I guess.

Well the 54 shot is just using my 401k which the calculators that they have on line to see if your on target show I am but, I was hoping to live high on the hog with 401k and then a pension to boot! Who needs social security?

If you can retire at 54 and live off your savings thats fantastic - I hope you enjoy yourself. I'm much younger than you and I'm not counting on getting anything from Social Security (not that its much to begin with), and would take anything I got from it as a bonus (this considering I'll probably pay in much more than I get out).

The earlier the better. I'd love to be able to retire tomorrow if I could. I take things day by day. I live quite humbly and I'm very thrifty and frugal. I'd like to move to someplace where the land is cheap and retire with as little as $200,000. If I can buy a home and just have property taxes to pay, I should be able to live off my stock market portfolio winnings. I think I can rely on at least 5% which would be enough to live the way I live.

Now, that's a refreshing bit of sound wisdom. It's good to see someone else here with some good sense. If only some of the young people would actually chime in and say that they agree I would say that we have some smart kids here on the forum. |
