Benjamin,
Any chance we could institute short selling? It could add alot to our compettition here in the next couple of months I think.
If it's already possible, where's the "assembly instructions" (fit tab a into slot b while extacting rod z from the actuator mechanism (Can you tell I'm a "Daddy" ? Ha Ha Ha ) |

It woulld be quite a bit of programming work to get this running properly.
Thats not to say it's completely out of our scope, but it'll be a while. |

| I'm curious. How many programmers did it take to write the simulator script? Are you a programmer yourself? |

The bulk of the simulator code was written by one person. There were some tweaks made along the way, but the current core package was designed and built specifically for this site.
We have designed the system to allow for short trades / limit trades, and both of those are hopefully going to be implemented over time. We also plan to keep a history of monthly returns, and be able to show annual return and "life to date" returns as well. There is no planned release date for these new features as of yet, but the system as it stands today was written to allow those features to be added at a later date. |

The majority of the programming and making the initial concept work was done by the Famous phpBB Database programmer Dave Rathbun.

You may see him from time to time on the forums as he's a bit of an investor himself! |

| Short selling and limit trading would add a lot of interest, I think. |

Limit trading will be relatively easy to implement, given the current state of the code. Short selling will be trickier, but I expect that we'll get it added along the way at some point. There are lots of rules regarding short sales (sell only on an uptick, checking to see that quantity of shares are available to short, and so on) and we'll have to decide how those are going to be applied in the game. |

Well, if you notice there is a choice for Market orders... but only a choice for Market at this time. Which is fairly pointless. Once we flip the switch, so to speak, there will be an option for Limit orders, at which point you will also have to specify a limit price and a GTC or DAY duration. GTC = Good 'Till Cancelled, and DAY means the order expires at the end of the day. It's all in the plan. |

| Well, maybe I'm the only one, but I actually prefer to trade using market orders. |

Any reason? I think the twenty minute delay can have a pretty big impact on returns, especially when it comes to buying just after the market opens. I don't see any reason not to use limit orders, they protect you from paying too much for a stock that moves quickly.
Not to press for too much this Christmas, but what about stop losses? |

All the 20 minute delay does is put your trades in time with the quotes. The quotes are 20 minute delayed... the orders are 20 minute delayed... therefore they're on the same "clock". Placing a "market" order to purchase stock before the market opens will be traded as soon as the order queue starts processing, which is as soon as the quotes are available from Yahoo. It's just like in real life... if you place a market order before the market opens it will be executed when the market opens, but in real time.
Or perhaps I'm missing your point. |
