| I am ready to start my own portfolio within the next 6 months or so with a few thousand dollars I have been saving up. What is something lower risk but has potential over years to grow? |

| invest in a mid cap mutual fund... American funds is a fund company with an outstanding track record. In your home state of Maryland, you have T. Rowe price who also has an excellent track record with its funds. Small caps might be a little more risk than you are willing to take, but mid caps have growth potential with less volatility than their smaller counterparts. Morningstar.com is a good place to screen for some mutual funds. |

Some economists believe that no matter how low the risk, your best bet is to still diversity your investments. A mix of stocks and bonds, as well as the types of stocks can help you hedge risk. This doesn't just mean buying a lot of different types of stock, but the right mix of stocks. This may involve stocks that are inversely correlated with one another or some other sort of relationship.
Try to Google "Modern Portfolio Theory" for more information. |

1. tax effiency
2. diversification
3. low cost
4. simplicity
