Curious if you've ever considered adding a rating system to the board where people give "votes" to individual posts? I'm part of a couple other forums with the feature and I think it helps tremendously in encouraging constructive and intelligent conversation, as well as a good amount of humor.

I'd post links but I'm not sure that's kosher... if you'd like examples feel free to send me a PM.

I do like that feature also although I have seen the feature been abused before where a person has rated all of another user's posts negatively. That would be my only concern, but what do I know! Razz

Message ratings / topic ratings / user ratings... are all interesting and useful features if used properly. However the potential for abuse is high.

I think message ratings are fine, I am personally against user ratings. I realize a lot of boards use that feature, but I don't like it for a wide variety of reasons. I have written / implemented a topic rating system on another board I run, and it has been a singular failure so far. The idea was that people would rate topics that they found helpful. Instead what people will do is post a question and immediately rate their own topic thinking it would get more attention that way. Rolling Eyes And truly good topics (at least in my opinion) get little or no attention even if they have ratings.

If we used user ratings I would suggest that only users with some minimum post count (30?) would be allowed to rate other users. And there would be a log kept of who rated who what, and you would be permitted to change your rating. This would be done to allow people to change their mind and would prevent (or slow down) people registering additional accounts just to bump up (or down) someone else's rating.

In a perfect world a rating system of any kind could be a very useful tool. Smile Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world.

I'm not in favor of user ratings. The boards I referred to allow you only to add a positive or negative vote to any message and you can't rate your own. The board's community at large benefits imo.

By user ratings do you mean a reputation mod? A reputation mod is good for people to give when they have traded/sold things to each other or done favours...etc.

I don't like that idea because what if you don't agree with what the are saying or you don't like that person your going to rate them poorly

Idea I think allowing User Ratings would be counter to Ben's ruling earlier in the year on ad hominem attacks, because I've seen message boards use them and that's what the ratings become in the end. People develop a squabble and trash the place up with it by finding ways to manipulate the User Ratings of one another. Exclamation

It could work if the minimum number of posts you have to have before rating would be say 50 and when you do rate someone, you have to have a proper reason explained not just: he has a stupid username or he is new and is asking stupid questions.
Another thing you could do is add a warning system. Some forums have them. Here's how it works:
Every user has a percentage bar under their username and every time they brake a forum rule they get a warning which can add 20-100% to the bar, depending on the violation. And if you have say 50% you can't post and when you have 100% you will be banned. The percentages go away 10 or 20% a week. Would it be too hard to do?

I think it might get crazy with the ratings.

Its useless and its no good.. What's the point of adding them? Feeding someone's ego? In my experience, people vote for posts that they agree with, even if they aren't sensible and useful. I am strongly against it, thank you very much.

I am not sure if a message rating system would work on a site like this. My reasoning for saying this is the great differences in the way some of our members view investing and trading. I know of atleast 2 posters who this system would not benefit and that would be a shame. Also the board is not very big right now so people should have enough time to read all of the new posts and make their own decisions about the topics.

Here is some Reaper logic why we doan need no stinkin rating system. 90% of the investing public is wrong mosta da time. Therefore, when I say sumthin to ya like...."did you know that AAPL is eventually a sub $20 stock?" the vast majority of you are gonna think I'm freakin nutz! And I am! But I don't think I desoive a neggy rating from all a yuns just cause o'da fact that you all think AAPL is really a $50 stock in the werst case scenario.....and probably a $100 stock. Why don't we just wait until AAPL hits $25 and then you can collectively say..."ya know....da Reaper was right.....we doan need no stinkin message rating system" Very Happy

Yeah, a rating system would trash this site. We all have a right to express our opinions on stocks here. No matter how far off the mark we may be. It's always good to here the ying and yang of a stock.
