Depending on your financial situation, I would strongly encourage you to talk with your companies financial advisor (large companies tend to have individuals around to help answer your questions).

Different companies can offer different benefits, but you will usually see some income tax benefits, some matching contributions, and a reasonable growth plan.

Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge will be able to direct you in the right direction.

Research your company's 401(k) and what it is invested in. Most 401(k) plans have solid investments. Ask questions. Don't be afraid. Invest a little at first, then increase. Do they match?

If your company offers a match, then that makes it a lot more attractive. I'd contribute at least as much necessary to get that matching money. Smile

If your company offers a dollar for dollar match, do it! That's a no-brainer cause it's free money. It doubles your retirement investment. Most companies offer a 3 to 5 % match but that's no where near the maximum amount you can put in.

It is a good and easy way to get started investing if you never have invested any more before. Money is deducted before you ever see it, so you never miss it. Free money from your employer is a good incentive too.. Very Happy

Plus, many people are mistaken to think that if they don't stay long enough to become "vested" that they lose their own money. Wrong! You keep every penny that you contribute even if you quit too early to get the company's contribution.
