Sure why not? Seriously, when you're starting out in your career, retirement is the last thing on your mind since most of the time, you love your job and can't imagine why you would want to putter around the home doing nothing.
So a better goal maybe being financial independent instead. That way once you've reached middle-age says in your mid 30s to early 40 and became burnout on your job you can have the option of leaving the rat race and sail off into the sunset or if you've reached the same age bracket and instead became an energizer bunny workaholic, you still can continue to build on your sizable fortune. That took care of the age objective (35 ish) as far as saving strategy, invest in 401K up to employer matching if any, then IRA and taxable investment accounts with a diversified asset allocation plans across all of them. |

| My target age is 70. Up till then (IF my health holds out) I would like to stay active and involved in work. Staying home would be too boring for me. |

| I think retiring at 65 would be ideal for me. But I'd probably want to invest in a franchise or build my own business so I would have a nice financial cushion just in case. |

Is it just me, or does anyone else see having kids as an investment? As delusion/crazy as I am, I always thought about how many kids I want, and when they will turn old, and how many people I would have to take care of me when I'm old. The more kids you have, the more chances you have of someone taking care of you when you're older.
But sticking on topic, assuming the 2 kids I want, I'd probably say I want to retire at 65. If my wife pumps out 8 kids and they all turn out to be doctors and engineers and professors like all my uncles on my mothers side, I can retire at 55.

I was thinking 60. that way, i can be done, my boys will be long since grown and have families of their own. Right now, i'm 31. so i'm doing tthe 60-30-10 strategy. 60(stocks) 30(MF's) 10(MM's).
I plan on maxing out on a roth IRA sometime this year.
i want to have about 2Mil before i'm 60....any strategies? |

I also hope to be able to retire by 40, not that I will, but I want to option there. I think if you're smart (both intellectually and with money) theres a more realistic chance than people think.
And I'm never having kids. |

| I want to have the option of retiring at 50 but I doubt I will actually stop working until around 70. I want to have kids and with the way college tution is climbing and the cost of everything else I think it would be hard to retire before 60. |

geb,
If you work for a company that offers a 401k and match up to a certain percentage make sure you're contributing at least up to the % they match. Invest in a good quality stock fund and You will be surprised how it will add up |

The job I have doesn't give you an option, you're out the door @ 60. For the entry that mentioned 8 children, be careful what you wish for. You might get it I have 5, and though they've been the center of my life, just in plain years spanned it pushes you close to retirement just getting them raised.
However, I've found the perfect "second career". I'm going to be a WalMart greeter. Just stand at the door and wave to all the folks, round up the carts, and in general... NOT THINK! My brain is tired, and I look forward to using my back and my smile for awhile.
Don't laugh, it could be you |

The best retirement advice in the world: never have kids.
I was hoping my girlfriend could never have kids, because shes 4'11", but apparently medicine has become quite advanced, and she wants kids. Except for that and liking wheat bread, she's perfect. |

I cannot get full social security until age 66 (in 13 yrs.). Whether I can retire before that depends upon how my investments do. At least I am to the point that I can sock 20% into my 401k and max out a Roth IRA.
I am also gradually converting IRA money to the Roth for flexibility, so I will not be forced into a higher tax bracket if I want to or have to pull out a lump sum for pleasure or medical expenses. With inflation and relatively lower percentage of workers to retired baby boomers, I doubt if my tax bracket when I have to draw from the 401k will be lower than now.
My brother retired at the age of 32, almost 30 yrs ago. He has not let me in on his secrets. But from what I could gather, it sounded like he was all cash going into October and 75% cash at Thanksgiving. So he probably got some stock bargains in the dips. |
