Hi,

j
Just wondering for those who own small companies that operate online and/or in retail shops around the world.

I have often thought of setting up a online shop selling computer products after workign with a local shop.

Im looking for information regarding the diffence between having a outlet in yourr local town/state/city etc to havign a shop online.

The reason i ask is this. When you own your own shop in a high street its easy for customers to return products and you get eye to eye contact which i feel leads to better quality service but then when you open a shop online you can send anything anywhere (within reason) but dont get the same type of consumer relation as you would in s hop?

Any one got other thoughts?

id say an online one is best, its propably the easiest to set up, because you dont need to buy property and so on. and you dont have to work as many hours online. its just simpler online, more and more people are being able to get online theese days.

but if you set up a online compnay would you miss the day to day contact with your customers???

If you see your customers every so often surley that builds up a good relationship?

I just started an online business myself. It's basically gifts and such.It took a little time to set up and I work at it for several hours everyday.I think doing it online is much easier than a B&M.It's less expensive anyway.

I think online is great, especially for younger people, because people dont, see you and be biased against you just cause your young,

Im setting up an online business, have the site 95% done, but will then require us to get clients, by going and seeing them(this will be a challenge, but exciting)

Also online usually means that you dont have to spend as much money setting it up....

Online business may be the best for some people, but believe it or not, a lot of people aren't that skilled with a computer. Instead, they offer quality products, for cheap, and are skilled at customer relations, and have a very successful business without a website. It is nice to have a website, because you can reach a lot more people, but I wouldn't necessarily say "better"

I think that a mix of physical and online business is really the best way to go.
The online business (or a website in the very least) can bring a lot of exposure, and attract local buyers (acts as a resource, and a permanent adverstisement).

It really comes down to a customer's personal prefernce, comfort level, and the nature of the business though. Some individuals prefer face to face service, or like having that option.

I sell handmade pottery. It is a product that has to be seen, felt & held in person. I use my website for advertizing new craft shows i will be in, or to show my stlye of work, but I do not expect people to really buy online.

I think it really depends on the product & who your market is.

You make a good point. And at the current time, not everyone feels safe buying online

To start off, online is the best, but it depends on

A. What your product is

B. If you will make enough income to make it worth while

I think so because its much more cheaper. You dont have to pay expensive rent every month. Instead, you pay a small fee for web hosting.

Computers as an online business is a hard sell if you are building them and shipping them out. A lot can happen to them in transit. We used to ship computers, and when they arrived, UPS had beaten them up even though we'd packaged them quite well. Also returns are a hassle as there is shipping issues. Many people don't get why they have to pay to ship an item back if it was defective. Other businesses are less risky online.

Nothing is for sure- and I wouldn't say one is always better- but I have heard recently of many smaller bricks and mortar stores closing and selling on ebay and the like and doing better with less hours put in each week.
