I know that updating my old furnace/ac can help my home's investment. What my question is: Does it matter if you buy a cheaper a/c or furnace...Do you think it will add anything to the value of my home to say this a/c is the newest, most expensive...or should it be fine just to say the furnace and a/c is new...

I think a middle of the road would be good. You don't want to spend the money on the most expensive but if you go too cheap then the prospective buyer may think it will need replaced and use that as a factor.

Thanks for your opinion. I wasn't sure. I don't want to spend twice the price...but of course the salesman told me it would really increase the resale value of the home to have X brand...

In our area the local public utility companies give a discount for putting in a more energy efficient furnace.

Our city also provides an incentive for a more efficient A/C but to recoup the extra money spent on the higher seer A/C it would take up to 10 years (in my area), and most buyers are looking for a home with the appliance in good working cond.
