I tried this also once and got NOTHING good out of it. For some people they know how to do it and do it well (as with everything) Amway, pyramid schemes, it does work for some people but the majority No.

Free magazine subscriptions are not that unusual. You "pay" for them by getting on their mailing (or emailing) list for the rest of your life. If (as an example, no idea if the % is correct) 10% of the people that got a free magazine subscription sign up for a renewal, then I bet it pays for the freebie subscription.

I get free subscriptions all the time with expiring frequent flyer miles.
