An old farmer died and left 17 cows to his three sons. In his will, the farmer stated that his oldest son should get 1/2, his middle son should get 1/3, and his youngest son should get 1/9 of all the cows. The sons, who did not want to end up with half cows, sat for days trying to figure out how many cows each of them should get.

If you take the common factors of 2, 3, and 9 and multiply them together you get 54. Take 1/2 of that and you get 27/54, 1/3 is 18/54, and 1/9 is 6/54. You can reduce each of those fractions by a factor of 3, so 27 becomes 9, 18 becomes 6, and 6 becomes 2. 9 + 6 + 2 = 17. I realize the riddle has already been solved, but it does work out in another way without adding an extra cow.

The trick is that 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/9 does not add up to 100% of the cows. So you can't work it from addition, you have to work it out where the fractions become whole numbers instead.

For example, 9 is not half of 17. 6 is not 1/3 of 17. And 2 is not 1/9 of 17. But if you take the fractions and convert them to whole numbers as I did above, you do get a sum of 3 values that adds up to 17. Cool
