Is there a way to find out or approximate current home values without the expense of an appraisal? Thanks!

Ask a neighborhood realtor.

The best way to determine what a piece of real estate is worth is to determine what is currently being paid for similar property. So, in an effort to introduce themselves to you and make a favorable impression should you ever decide to use a realtor, most agents will be happy to prepare a free Comparable Market Analysis for you. This is a list of homes or building of similar age, location and square feet~ and what they sold for.

If you want to research it, like the above poster said, you can go onto mls.com and look up your area, and homes in the neighborhood etc.

Also, usually real estate agents will do a free market evaluation in hopes of getting your business.

In our county you can go to their website and type in an address and find out the assessed value on any home in the county.

Even though you can figure out the general idea of value of your home this way- it's been amazing to me lately how many homes Ive heard have sold for much more than their value.
