I got a call once from a cell phone carrier that someone tried to open an account in my name in New York.

I notified the 3 major credit buearu's and they put something on my account so that if any new accounts of any kind were attempted to be opened they had to call me for the ok first.

Did they use a current card to charge something? What happened?

That happend to my wife awhile back it was a giant pain in the arse. Call one of the main credit bureau's and let them know possible idenity theft theyll put a note on your credit like ben said. and there supposed to notify the other bureau's Call the phone company and try and get it shut down let them know it was fraud. and then keep an eye on her credit report to make sure they dont do more with her number.

a long time ago a collection agency came to my house looking for my brother saying he owed a lot of money. My parents were very confused about how he could have several credit cards, applied for a car loan and also have taken out a small personal loan when he was 3 years old. Like Ben said we called the police notified the 3 major credit beauros and had to go to court to get the collection agency off my brothers back. They were pissed that he would talk to them, seriously. It was such a pain dealing with the collection agencies. They didn't care. They tried to say it was us that used my brothers name. But after a while and some large lawyers fees it was taken care of.

Also a computer was stolen from wells fargo a couple years ago, which is who I have my studen loans through, and this one computer had all the information of every student they loaned money to for the past couple years. They set up some credit monitoring program for us, probably under the direction of their lawyers, so that if my credit gets stolen at least I will know about it.

I think identity thieves use the name in a different place to help hide the trail... was anything else purchased in her name or just the cell phone?

I know it sounds crazy but no matter how old you are they have a credit report on you, from the time you get your social security card till you die.

If you get a credit alert put on your file they will call you before they do anything that can go on your credit so make sure you have a good number on file with them.
