I've been on yahoo and looking at which stocks they upgrade to buy, I've bought, and most of them have gone down shortly afterwards? any suggestions?

Been there, done that.

Murphy's law of buying stocks. It will go down after you buy. Chance are once things settle down they go back up. If you long on the stock you dont have to worry too much, but if your short on it, it will be a long wait.

Oh, and one more thing, the stock will probably go up after you sell it. Just pick your exits and don't get greedy.
