Ok, I'm not a fan of New Years Resolutions, but I figure that someone needs to ask the question: Do you have one, and if so, what is it?
I would say mine is to never make one, but that opens up a Pandora's Box of logic hell where everything you say is paradoxical or something... I'd rather not think about it right now, it makes my head hurt. |

Lets see.... I quit smoking and started exercising last year. Maybe this year I will make real strides towards early retirement with some good buys and trades in the market. |

not a new years resolution, as i vow to myself nevre to make resolutions, although i do use new years to reflect on the mistakes or bad decisions ive made in the past year and try to figure out how to learn from them...
though this year i do have a goal and that is to quit smoking. ive already got the excercise as part of my essential daily needs, i DO need to let go of the smoking. |

Yeah it was one of the hardest things to do but once I did not have the first one for the day it wasn't too hard. It's been since the begining of september and I'm starting to really feel the benefits of quiting
Go for it...you'll feel soooo much better |

I'm a smoking trying to quit too.
The longest I've gone without a smoke since I started was 6 months. I have to say I know what your mother was talking about. It's amazing how much of your life is based on when you get your next cigarette and how much your life and thoughts revolves around it happening. Whether it's getting in your car or waking up in the morning it practically runs your life.
Once your off you can really see so many other goals in life, better job, clean the garage, save more money. Nonsmokers really do not realize how deep even light smokers, can be into addiction.
Anyway I really got to try again...wish me luck!

Go kick some @$$ Ben!
Maybe this would be a good time to short Altria (MO)... how heavy of a smoker are you?
Good luck with it, if you need any extra motivation I'm sure you could talk about it here and someone could yell at you (because you like yelling). |

One pack a day is pretty low, I used to think that was what I smoked but in reality it was one and a half to two packs a day.
Per year costs...
365x $3.00=$1095.00...547.5x$3.00=$1642.50...730x$3.00=$2190.00 plus extra premium for health care insurance....$150.00x12=$1800.00.
It is a very expensive habit to have. |

I feel your pain Ive got you by about 2 or 3 years. I even quit for 3 years in the middle, so now here I am typing on the computer trying to rub more nicotine out of my nicotine PATCH!!
A new baby and adding up how much you spend on them will definetly put a kink in your plans.
Good luck to everybody with the same iratability as me |

That's probably the best way to look at it, especially on this site. Put it down in dollars and cents. It's not the same, but I use the same logic to stop eating lunch out with co-workers every day. $5-8 per day times 5 days a week runs into $25 - 40 per week. $25 per week times 50 weeks a year is $1250 in "lost" money. Take a brown bag, call it $1 per day (for a sandwhich, piece of fresh fruit, homemade cookies or something) and you've saved $1000 per year.
The quote from Ben Franklin was "a penny saved is a penny earned." I saw an update on that a while back... "a penny saved is two pennies earned." The reasoning was that in order to get a penny through earnings you have to earn two pennies so you can pay taxes. If you save a penny, that's two pennies that you didn't have to earn. So saving a penny or two (or a buck or two) on a pack of cigs per day is like giving yourself a $2200 per year raise (based on the $1095.00 annual cost for the least expensive scenario listed above).
Think of the possibilities. Think of each cig that you want to smoke as an early withdrawal from an interest bearing account.

ok so today is Day 1 of me not smoking...1/3/2006 as of 12am
16 hours, 38 minutes and 44 seconds smoke free.
10 cigarettes not smoked.
$2.73 and 1 hour of my life saved.
i can definitley see the money being a great incentive for me to quit. |
