This goes against the idea that paying with cash a good way to spend within your means, but I think there is some truth to it. Try not carrying cash in your wallet or purse and see if you spend less. My wallet is just a collection of ID cards and credit cards. Today, I bought something for a friend online, and he paid me back with cash. I have cash in my pocket for the first time in months, and all I want to do is spend it!

I better go to the bank soon. Embarassed

This has been working for me recently.

When I have cash it's like cotton candy...it looks like a lot, but then it just magically disappears!

I know when I dont carry cash I definetly spend less, just pay for everything with my debit card. For one I dont have all this loose change that just collects in my coin bucket. And I wont pick up extra stuff at the conveinance store..

I had 22 dollars in my pocket at the beginning of the day, and now I have a dollar and change (Which will probably be spent on some candy later tonight).

But at least now I have some nice inexpensive vodka, which I will soon transform into top shelf tasting vodka using the greatest money saving secret ever: vodka purification using a brita filter!

Wow... thats amazing. The ingenuity of mankind never ceases to amaze me. I have found that I have this need to get rid of $1 bills, as I will literally spend them on any useless/stupid/semi-appealing thing I see. My general rule is to carry nothing under a $20, which seems to limit my spending for some reason - I call it the "Large Bill/Small Bill Theory". If you have bigger bills, you are less likely to break them, but once you get down to the 10 and unders, they start flying out of your wallet.
Maybe its just me.

Anyone who have seen my wallet know that I don't carry cash at all and because of the same reason. Whenever I have cash, I tend to spend it on little snacks and stuff. Its not that I don't have control, I just don't like loose coins laying around which I also tend to get rid of easily. Debit cards are controllable and I can see my expenses only.

Maybe we also don't make our girlfriends work or pay for dates. Maybe we also aren't cheap Wink . But living where I do, I have to be on guard against getting labeled with the rest of my part of town's population.

I have talked to a few of my friends and they seem to agree that whenever they carry around credit cards they spend a lot of money but if they only carry around $20 they hardly ever buy anything.

My policy is that I only carry $20 bills, which was working alright, but now I just spend through them. I've come to realize I have little to no restraint buying things, its ingrained in my genes. Thanks Dad!

As long as I can keep a $20 bill I am less likely to break it... once I break it ... it just burns a hole in my pocket .. now my wife on the other hand just spends ... Laughing

My reality check was tracking my spending for a week and seeing on paper how fast and needlessly the cash is spent. On a weekend alone my hubby and I could spend $200 without leaving the house except to eat. Scary stuff!!! I have also found that the carry around a $20 helps. You really don't want to break it because once you do it's gone!! I'm learning slowly but surely!! Very Happy

Using cash makes it difficult to track spending. I usually keep a $20 bill hidden in my wallet for emergencies. After Hurricane Katrina, most businesses would only accept cash--so you've got to plan for events like this. Cash appears to disappear as if you have a whole in your pocket.
