Just wanted to add...I don't know if real estate is the "best" investment anymore. It is a good investment bacause you can live in it...however I've been burned once before on the thought of saving saving saving...to get the downpayment- bought the house and then the r.e. market took a plunge. More than the downpayment was lost. I guess everything has a risk...

You don't buy in an inflated market - you continue to invest and save. Eventually, you buy a piece of undervalued land - sell-off a piece of it for a profit and built a home which you live in for awhile than sell for a profit again. Pre-existing homes in this market tend to cost more than building - at least they do where I live.
