You CAN e-mail the seller to work out a deal. Mention the fact that you want to purchase several books and would like to combine shipping. If the seller is easygoing, he can issue a partial refund for the shipping costs. |

As with anything online, do your own DD. For Ebay you need to check out the seller/buyer's history and make your decision accordingly.
For Amazon marketplace, it verifies the buyer's credit before comitting you to the transaction so that's a plus for which there is a fee.
I like Amazon best for books and Ebay for everything else providing that you do your own DD on your sellers and buyers accordingly. |

Overstock.com also offers an auction venue. I have purchased some things from the auctions, but it is extremely similar to eBay...but smaller. They are a fledgling auction site that is growing at a respectable rate.
Also, keep in mind that with Amazon, selling in the Marketplace and Auction sections are very different and can garner different results. |

| Don't forget about half.com. It's a part of ebay but there are differences. The main one being, I think is that the payer pays immediately. There's no having to wait for money. |

Just like dealing with sellers or buyers on eBay, you are basically dealing with individuals. The site does not assume any liability for buying or selling, so if something screws up, you are pretty much SOL. |

| All of these services (ebay, half, amazon) have ratings systems. So the buyer has plenty of information. The seller doesn't always have the same ability to find out if a buyer is a scammer. But proof of delivery and insurance for high-ticket items is usually good enough. |

SOL means Sh-t Out of Luck. The costs are very similar for both. |

I agree, but every system has away around it. If someone is a scammer, they are going to do whatever they can to make it look like they are not, but I do agree with you.
