I have a Sharebuilder account. This was my first experience in investing, so I have really enjoyed it. However, if I were more than a novice at this, I might choose to go another route. I'm sure I'll learn more if I just hang around this site.

| I have been with Sharebuilder for about 5 years and couldn't be more pleased. NO minimums, NO commitments, and only $4 transaction fee. NO account fees for regular individual accounts (nonIRA's/ESA). Think they have over 1 million accountholders now. Actually you can get a free $25 for opening an account (I get 5 free trades), PM me. |

Becarefull about sharebuilder and other window trading brokers. You are not really making real trades that are hitting martet floors. Rather Sharebuilder is making the trades internally, making and making the spread between the bid and ask price. If the buys and sells do match up then the brokerage will execute a trade to make its demand. More than likely this trade will not reach the market floor either. It will be executed by a low cost market maker that the brokerage get rebates on.
There is no free lunch and most brokers play similar tricks, but window trading is worst offender. |

Believe Stacy wanted to know if Sharebuilder is a good place to start. Don't know for sure but if she is just starting she is probably starting out small and if that is the case ShareBuilder or ex24 might be a good choice. Those just starting out with small amounts usually are not concerned with getting the absoulute best stock price at a particular place in time. If she is starting out with say $500 or more then maybe a Scottrade would work, "real time" trades, etc. Hope you agree. |

Sharebuilder is less than mediocre as a broker.... but they are "reliable".
Buy some books on investing......
Mutual Funds For Dummies
Investing For Dummies
would be two good ones to start with.
Investing..... more specifically investing in stocks has risks. Your time horizon should be at least 5 years...... but even with that you could lose 50% or more of your money....... on the other hand... historically you'll have more than you put in after 5 years. The market has always been crazy.... Crazy like a fox. If you learn about it.... you stand a chance at doing well. Chances are... you'll need more than $300 to open an account.
