| I do not trust computers at this point to drive my car. My computer is way to crappy to trust with something as important as driving. |

| I think that the computers to drive your car would be slightly better than the junk you have for running email, but I don't have enough confidence in them either way. I'd prefer having a human in control of anything like that (car, airplane) just because of the unreliable nature of computers. Thats not to say that humans are necessarily better, but I don't think the technology is currently suitable for remotely difficult driving (especially in places like Massachusetts - the people are nuts). |

| Think of how often a computer crashes. That would be an accident and most likely the accidents would be horrific not the average fender bender that you see on the side of the road. Say you are going 70 mph and the computer crashes. You can say good bye to this life. |

 All cars, since the mid eighties, have computers in them to monitor and control the engine and engine systems performance. There are systems that moniter/contol speed, tire inflation, gps, seat position, traction and brake applications. All that's needed is to shrink the size of the different monitoring systems to fit into the body design and program developement to actually drive the car.
Question is, would you want something like this? Why have something so impersonal as this when you could use some other means of transportation. Not have the cost associated with owning such a technological monster. 
I would rather develope a personal matter transporter so we could electronically transport ourselves anywhere via satellites  |

| I don't like the idea of a computer driving me around, I'd much prefer driving the car myself. I'm not dead set with that though, if the technology existed (and could be turned off and manually driven from time to time) I don't think I would have a problem with using it for tedious day-to-day type stuff. |

Here's the thing... would you trust the computer to drive if everyone were being driven by computer? What if only 50% of cars were driven by computer?
I would be much more inclined to trust a computer if I knew that everyone else were. I can envision a massive network of cars where every car talks to every other car. "Hey, I need to exist in 1/2 a mile." "Okay, I'll slow down and let you merge in." "Hey, I'm going a long way and am crusing at a higher rate of speed." "Okay, let me make sure that you have clearance on the 'fast lane' for the next 100 miles."
That would be okay. But if a computer had to act / react to normal "human" reactions, uh uh, no way I'm going to go for that. It's all or nothing for me. |
