Ok, contemplating these changes for next month. I'd like your feedback on them. We are trying to do this so the competition will be fair for everyone and will allow the most members to gain the most knowledge by using the game.
============================
No more Pennies. No more options.
-Start of July reset everyone back to 0%
-All holdings are sold for the current price and moved intoyour eInvesting$ wallet
-Going forward all stocks bought must be valued over $2, but if it drops below you can still sell it at any time.
ADVANTAGES
-Everyone would be on the same playing field
-People would invest more how they would in real life as 95% of everyday investors would NEVER invest in options or penny stocks.
-Easier for the Admin (me) to provide maintenance (no expiring options and less stock name changes)
-Portfolio % would be more realistic. If investonator got 1000% again in 5 days I for one would be VERY impressed and buy his book if he decided to write one. King
DISADVANTAGES
-Everyone would need to buy all their stocks again (or something else) when we start over
-Some hardcore investors might get bored and leave
-The simulation would be less realistic
Why not have both and seperate the two?
-Programming costs would be too high
-The rankings would be a lot more complicated
-Administering two seperate systems is too time consuming
As Raspberry24 pointed out "investing is supposed to be like watching grass grow". I think with this sim and forum we can make watching grass grow WAY MORE FUN!
Let me know any other advantages or disadvantages to using this system you can think of. Maybe then we'll open it up to a vote! Don't you love Democracy?? |

I don't mind these changes, but I have a question...
Will Portfolio Return still be calculated the same way? Meaning based on individual trades rather than actual entire portfolio return? |

sorry if i missed it.
Q.1 is there a way to lock out trades entered when the regular session of
the market is closed?
Q.2 is there a way to have trades placed after the regular session to be
executed on the open of the next regular session of the market?
if we are getting the closing price and some news comes out positive or negative... it might be nice to take this away so no one is tempted to take a short cut to riches. |

IMO you should keep the limit at 1.00 for stocks simply because there are actually more opportunities in stocks that are low priced, here are some stocks that are now trading for much higher prices that were once sub 2.00 stocks, NVTL, AMR, WMB, UHAL, MTSN, all from different sectors (and all gonna be sub 2.00 dawgs in da future again too), I can understand not allowing sub 1.00 dawgs into the game, but by letting the 1.00+ dawgs run some of the visitors can get a chance to learn from players who know how to spot a turnaround situation, and a great % of turnaround plays come from below 2.00, besides, if Jim Cramer ever decides to come on board and play he won't be able to pick up those 2 dawgs he's been toutin, CMGI which is on its way to sub 1.00, and LU which has a better than good chance at being a sub 1.00 dawg in the not too distant future, besides, dawgs need love too! as far as options, I think it would be great if you could keep options in play under a different section of the site, I'm just learning how to play options and began experimenting with them here at EI, this is the only site I know of that let's you learn how to use them, so please don't take em away, pleeeeeez dooooooooon't, I'll do anything! I'll cut yer grass! I'll kiss yer aaaaahhh, never mind |

We are still planning to calculate the entire portfolio return instead of individual stocks. The programming aspect still needs to be addressed though.

We could do this, but I think it's fun for those that can't get on during the day to still trade after the markets close, even if the prices aren't moving. It would take quite a bit of programming as well to implement.

Pretty much the same answer as above. I think we'll keep it live for now. This is something to think about for the future though.
| JumboJack wrote: | | oh yeah, i like freeye's idea. can we have good til cancelled feature available? limit orders too? |
I think stop order and limit orders will be something we would like to implement at some point. In the near future though we need to level the playing field before we add new features.

This minimum price is negotiable for now. We can make it $1 if there are really a lot of stocks that dip this low. Only problem is I've seen some options that cost this much as well. We need to do some more research to make sure the minimum is the best possible price.

I don't think there is another sim that allows options trading. Only thing is trading options isn't very realistic here anyway. Maybe there is something we can do...but it would be difficult.
Thanks for the feedback guys! |

Well a $2 minimum would allow some that would never invest in a stock that low to see how they'd do and also add a bit more of a "thrill" without too huge of jumps.
The thing is with it being more "real" stocks those that do well will really be visable and can perhaps help those that are losing. Maybe they can apply some of what they have learned in real life and then you win no matter what. |

I think the admin is on the right track with this. Good luck with the changes.
I don't mind being reset...and I'm still winning!
It'll be cool to see how everyone does when it's just regular stocks. |

i'll support the administrator 100% on all the final decisions.
i don't have strong feelings on the $5 minimum but simply wanted to represent the $5 minimum position in the recorded tally. |

One other suggestion for the new trading format, if options are eliminated, how about setting things up so players will have the option of shorting as well as buying long positions? that would make trading more realistic and give us a chance to protect long positions from time to time, I also would like to see the new system allow limit buys, buy stops, sell stops, you know, all da good stuff |

| I like Freeye's suggestion of giving the next price during opening of regular hours trading for market orders too, there's another stock game I play that has prices on a 20 minute delay, the entire top 10 does nothing but check the premarket news and then puts up picks that are being driven by good or bad news, like what happened to IIJI, when the stock finally opens at the site they have a guaranteed gain, it ruins much of the fun, plus visitors of the site don't get to see what the best stock pickers have in their ports because they never make it to the top 40 list, hopefully that won't happen here, it could be totally eliminated if EI only allows buying/selling with limit orders during regular hours trading, a simple fix. |
